Earth Day Greetings to All

earth day
Delhi Greens wishes all its readers a very Happy Earth Day on this 22nd Day of April!

The celebration of Earth Day on April 22nd first began in the United States in 1970 and was the brainchild of Senator Gaylord Nelson, who had long pondered about finding a way to “put the environment into the political ‘limelight’ once and for all”.

The relevance of the day has only increased over the years so much so that it is only a matter of few days that every action of ours will be under strict environmental monitoring.

Here’s how you can celebrate the day and make a difference by initiating activities that will go a long way in saving this Planet and also the human race that depends on it. Save Earth to Save Humanity!

1. Plant Trees: Planting trees helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, clean pollution, secure soil in place to prevent erosion, and provide homes to a lot of biodiversity.

2. Learn more about the Environment: Earth Day is a good time to make a commitment to learning more about the environment and how you can help to protect it. Borrow some library books or go through the newspapers and read up on issues such as pollution, endangered species, water shortages, recycling, and climate change. Or, learn about a region you’ve never considered before, like the Arctic, the deserts, or the rainforests. Think about the issues that concern you the most and if you haven’t done so already, join a local group that undertakes activities to help protect the environment in your area.

3. Reduce, reuse and recycle all day longearth heart in love with a planet: Buy as little as possible and avoid items that come in lots of packaging. Support local growers and producers of food and products – these don’t have to travel as far and so reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Recycle all the things you do use for the day or find other uses for things that you no longer use.

4. Rid Litter: Rid litter from the neighbourhood. Many groups use the weekend of Earth Day to clear roadways, highways and neightborhood streets of litter that has accumulated since the last ‘Rid Litter’. It’s time we atleast have a look at the Yamuna and take some green action.

5. Teach others about the Environment. Teachers, professionals, students, in fact anyone who cares about the environment and is willing to teach others, should provide environmental lessons for others.

Save trees delhi6. Wear green and/or brown: Dress in Environmental colours for the day; think “tree”! Wear badges if you have them that carry ‘save the environment’ messages.

7. Remember: Every day is Earth Day. Anything to help our environment is a perfect thing to do on Earth Day and every day. Don’t restrict yourself to just one day a year; learn about how you can make a difference to environmental protection all the time. And put it into practise – every day!

The Planet needs our help, so it can help us. If we turn our back, we will not live to see the day when the Planet does the same. Inaction is NO LONGER an option.

  4. We NEED development in harmoy with and repect of nature. We NEED development of the people,by the people, for the people.

We cannot allow GREED to overwhelm the above two NEEDS. All cast-color-creed on earth must have committed DEEDS in favor of MOTHER EARTH.

  5. Earth Day Poem
    by Hillol Ray

We are all puppets to cheer on this Earth,
While joy and sorrow always come since our birth !
Daylights follow dusk towards the gloomy nights,
And bring us such a joy to renew our sights !
Fresh air and clean water nourish our souls,
Without them, we suffer, and pay the heavy tolls !

To put a stop to these tolls, EPA was formed –
Over two decades ago, and brains were stormed !
For protection of nature, EPA took the vow –
To offer simple tips, let me tell ’em now !
Banning pesticides and lead in gasoline –
Made the giant move to make the nature clean !
Recycling became a daily household chore –
To reduce costs and protect the seashore !
Reduction of emissions created the flow –
Of cleaner air, and polluters took a blow !
Dumping of sewage into lakes and streams –
Was banned to prevent leery public screams !
Pollution of water became a salient issue –
To protect human health and aquatic tissue !

The situation has changed over twenty-five years,
And laws are in place to remove our fears !
Now an annual event hangs around us –
To recognize Earth Day without any fuss!
So let’s all sing Save the Earth songs,
And do things right to hear loud gongs !

Now, always think “Earth Is In Your Hands”,
Here at home or in foreign lands !
So let us follow these few simple roles,
To avoid the agonies of all future souls !
Conserve the water as much as you can,
While you are bathing or washing the van !
Recycle and prevent pollution at the source,
While care should be motive and the hidden force !
Plant the trees in open private space,
To create the shade and cool your face !
Try the carpool with a friend, or share a ride –
To control the air and emission ebb tide !

Dispose off pesticides in a real safe manner,
And label before you bury ’em under a banner !
Organize all efforts to discard the waste,
EPA may be called to quench any quest !
Invite friends to attend the Earth Day Acts,
And define each role to convey all facts !
Reward the guys for a job well done –
To share the benefits and all the fun !

Well, now you really know what you have to do –
And celebrate “Earth Day” without further woo !!!

  6. 7. Remember: Every day is Earth Day. Anything to help our environment is a perfect thing to do on Earth Day and every day. Don’t restrict yourself to just one day a year; learn about how you can make a difference to environmental protection all the time. And put it into practise – every day!

Yes..that is the most useful lesson that we must all must learn today. Earth – its more than a planet, its the entire universe compacted into a planet!

  7. To day Is earth day.Just by sending a greeting or planting a new tree is not enough to slebrate the day.we farmers every where are doing suisides. If you try to understand the reason behind that then only , I think it will be a real way to rember our mother earth.
the reason is the technology called as terminator tech and even though it is banned , every multination seed co is using it , to save thier right over the seed and in a real way terminting the farmers.
the other side effect’s is more devasting than the nuclear bomb. The new plant viruses are getting evolved which are more vulrent and so many plants like citrus , mango , banion
termarin shisum chit , ecaliptus, pine and many more are dying sudenly and even modern science cannot save them.

  8. this is especially for all hte students of delhi university to raise their voice against the massive tree fall planned as a part of the upcoming common welath games.
‘let us join hands to restore the our green campus’

  9. It is indeed disheartening to see Earth in its present status. and to think that it is our only home, we are really keeping it in an absolute state of disgust.

on this Earth Day…let all those who are already working to make a better planet, re-dedicate themselves while those who were just thinking of working to improve this planet, can start doing so from today.

after all, as Prez Bush once said, “we are all environmentalist now” – we have, but no option. A very Happy Earth Day to all..may it be a fresh start towards an even better planet.

    Cheers
    john

  10. HAPPY (?) EARTH DAY !!
it’s an event, not to be celebrated. it’s a GREY (for smoke) day for mother earth. why make some resolutions like on new year eve and forget???
rather sit down with a pen n paper and calculate the amount of resources you are putting to waste and your contribution in making the environment safe and healthy………….

i hate when people use glossy words to suggest what others should be doing, when they themselves are not willing to do what they say…………

  11. It is great to here that there are GREEN COMRADES in Delhi. Let us keep it up. Let us think locally, but act globally.KEEP IT GREENS. HAPPY EARTH’S DAY

  12. ‘The Earth (indeed) has enough for everyone’s need but not for man’s greed’. – M.K. Gandhi

  13. ~~~~~ H A P P Y E A R T H D A Y ~~~~~

Friends, Earth Day is a perfect time to reflect about what we are doing to help protect the environment. Power plants are the major sources of Green House gases. But we can not think of our society with out electricity. By minimising our electricity consumption we can contribute towards reduction of Green House gases in the environment. We should curve our greed and work towards sustainable development.
Consume resources in a rate less than Mother Earth’s ability to replenish.
    Think green.

  14. !!!!!!!!!!EARTH DAY!!!!!!
On this day we should take an oath to create awareness among the people regarding neat and clean environment and encourage people for implementing basic civic sense. what i have seen in delhi is, people (including educated ones) litter anywhere…we can’t talk in bigger terms until we are far off from the basic things.

  16. Well i agree totally that Everyday is Earthday.
Unless and until everyone puts his or her head down and and work on
ALL the points you have stated—-soon you’ll be in a different world-both the ways!!—-both the extremes are possible.

  17. Earth Day celebaration began way back in 1970!! And how much of saving our planet have we done? Instead the planet keeps saving us all the time. Perhaps we need to rethink our strategy. We think small first: Look at your neighbour, or life next door; dare to share your resources with them and you add one more day of life for them. You begin the process, and the “earth” follows. And what an Earth Day celebration would that be!
