Captive asian elephants are used by forest officers in kanha, kaziranga, nagarhole etc to conduct tiger censuses and also in some cases to patrol the forest to keep a lookout for poachers. They are an integral part of wildlife conservation in india and nepal .The only drawback is that they are fed just 10 kg of rice each day when they should be given 150 kg of both rice and plant matter.
