Stop a silent protest to save the yamuna

A Message to the concerned authorities:

Stop the mindless ‘developmental’ activities in the city.

Stop destroying the city and its ambience.

Stop – to pause and think before carrying out such activities and ensure that whatever is done is environmentally sound and sustainable.

AS A MARK OF PROTEST AGAINST THE UNMINDFUL AND CALLOUS ‘DEVELOPMENT’ OF THE CITY – DelhiGreens WILL REMAIN SILENT FOR THE NEXT ONE MONTH (From 13th July till 13th August).

We hope the message will reach where it should.

‘Deconstructing’ the Yamuna floodplains…

This is what mindless construction on the Mithi river of Mumbai led to back in 2005.

Mumbai Floods 2005

The land-deprived city of Mumbai – a city lying adjascent to a sea! – now faces the flood crisis every year.

___________

Coming back to Delhi – we have been ‘planning’ a similar fate for the city as well.

It is therefore requested to the Government and to the concerned authorities to take note of the same and – STOP the construction on the Yamuna floodplains – leading to an ecological deconstruction of the floodplains and of the entire city.

Surviving Eviction in Bawana JJ Colony: Presentation of Research Findings by Jagori

Jagori LogoJAGORI - a women’s training, documentation, communication and resource centre invites concerned citizens to attend a presentation of their research findings titled:

“Swept off the Map: Surviving Eviction and Resettlement in Bawana JJ Colony”

The study is an intensive two-year long exercise of
collecting quantitative and qualitative data from around 3000 families who have been forcibly resettled in this location on the North-Western outskirts of the city.

The research provides the “hard” evidence needed to back up the contention of activists and community groups, that the evictions and forced relocation to Bawana have shattered people’s lives and destroyed their livelihoods.

Jagori presentation invitation

The JAGORI Research Project is a unique effort to track the way in which the process of eviction and resettlement has literally pushed about 5000 families at least 25,000 women, men and children – off the map of the city, rendering them invisible to policy-makers and the public alike, allowing the State to wash its hands of any responsibility for securing their rights or even ensuring their survival.

Petition: Adopt Holisitic Ecological Agriculture in the XI Plan

Agri-Vision Coalition, a Civil Society and Farmer’s Representation on Agriculture has, in an online petition, asked the Prime Minister and the Chief Ministers of India for a paradigm shift in the XI plan, in order to secure livelihood for Small and Marginal Farmers and Regeneration of Natural Resources through Holistic Agriculture.

Towards better Organic FarmingOrganic agriculture is defined as a holistic food production management system, which promises and enhances agro-ecosystem health, including biodiversity, biological cycles and soil biological activity.”

Small and marginal farmers, whose land holdings are below 2 ha, constitute almost 80% of all Indian farmers, and more than 90% of them are dependant on rain for their crops. With Green Revolution Technology (GRT), their costs of cultivation and risks of crop failure are so high that often the farmers cannot recover even the money spent.

It is the experience of increasingly large numbers of farmers that holistic farming systems, based on scientifically proven techniques, are a very successful remedy to the economic and ecological crises engendered by GRT.

There is clear scientific empirical evidence that a holistic, organic approach to farming nurtures numerous effective microbes occurring in nature that make all the essential nutrients available to crops, and improve vital physical qualities of the soil, namely its porosity, aeration, moisture absorption, drainage, and resistance to erosion. Crop yields thus increase in a sustainable manner, input costs fall and farm incomes rise.

These and some more issues are identified and an 11 POINT AGENDA FOR THE 11TH PLAN has been prepared and posted on the petition page.

Take Action to save the FarmersClick here to read the 11 Point Agenda and to sign the petition urging the Government of India to adopt a holistic approach towards agriculture in the XI Plan – favouring sustainability, national health and distributive justice.
