Global Internet Giants Go Green!

Green - the colour in vogue!

Three of the Internet’s biggest brands - Yahoo!, Google and MSN have decided to go green! And there’s more to it than just the colour!

Symbolizing ‘environmental friendly lifestyle/activities leading to a sustainable society/development’, green has always been the colour for all things environment!

Green Yahoo!

Targetted primarily at the US citizen and with the logo - “Many small changes equal one great change“, green.yahoo.com - aims to fight global warming and helps users make an action plan that fits their lifestyle!

Amidst green news and facts, the website also enables the users to calculate their carbon footprint! 18seconds.org (- it takes only 18 seconds to change a light)- another initiative by Yahoo! is promoting the switch to Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) within the United States.

stopglobalwarming.orgIn collaboration with stopglobalwarming.org, MSN has been the web-address of the Live Earth Concert!

liveearth.in.msn.com features a host of ‘green’ articles, photos, videos and events. Microsoft’s official ‘Environment Stewardship and Sustainability’ Commitment and related articles can be read here at Microsoft’s official website.

Green MSN

Green MSN

stopglobalwarming.msn.com is asking users to do just 3 things (for) now -

  1. switch to CFL light bulbs
  2. adjust (the) thermostat
  3. insulate (your) water heater

It also has several interactive features and a lot of links to Environmental Blogs on Global Warming and Climate Change all over the www.

Somewhere around the beginning of this year, a Blog by the name of ecoIron had, in a post titled Black Google Would Save 750 Megawatt-hours a Year proposed the theory that a black version of the Google search engine would save a fair bit of energy due to the popularity of the search engine.

Following this, Heap Media - an Online Australian enterprise came up with Blackle.com - Powered by Google custom search!

green summer google

Google itself has something green up its sleeves. Built for the American traveller, services.google.com/earth/green/ lets users search for “environmentally friendly hotels” instead of just “hotels.” Powered by Google Maps, the URL also lists some green destinations within the United States.

google environmental friendly

Google should also be given credit for remembering all the different environmental days and festivals (e.g. World Environment Day, Earth Day, etc.) and changing its logo appropriately!

Call it environmental awareness, realization of a greater ‘corporate social responsibility’ or good business strategy…the Green Wave is here now and it does not seem to show any signs of fading away!

Back home in India, we havn’t been able to see much green so far! Although NDTV’s Environment Section has been around for some time, IBNLive has clearly taken the lead with its Citizens for Earth campaign. HindustanTimes also has a static page on Environment! However, our very own Internet Giants have so far remained unaware and untouched. It is time now that those who claim to be India’s No. 1 ISP brands come up with our very own green pages.

Anyone listening?

CSE Workshop: City Water & Waste Management - Alternative Paradigms

The Center for Science & Environment (CSE) has organized a five day workshop on ‘City Water & Waste Management: Alternative Paradigms’, to be held in New Delhi from October 16 to October 19, 2007.

CSE Waste water course

Cities in India are set to grow, but at what cost? Exploding demands for water, tonnes of untreated waste. How do we even begin to compute these costs, assess the water- waste balance for our thirsty urban growth?

Clearly, cities can do more with less – by cutting down on inefficiencies and distribution losses, all signs of poor management. But equally important are issues of resource equity – the massive gap in water supplies within the city. The challenge is therefore as much about justice as it is about technology.

We also need to address the enormous challenge of water pollution caused primarily by human waste. We urgently need to switch from the current paradigm of capital, water and material intensive processes of waste management to a more cost effective, non-sewerage paradigm of human waste disposal.

This is what the unique five-day workshop is designed to address and teach.

About the Course

Through hands-on workshops, interactive seminars, detailed case studies, field trips, and classroom instruction, the workshop explores current water-waste, pollution management practices and policies and its drawbacks, suggests an alternative paradigm more suited to the Indian situation, and teaches participants to design and implement localised wastewater treatment systems.

Course Modules

  • Status of water and excreta management in Indian cities
  • Water pollution and its management in Indian cities
  • Alternate sewage and pollution management strategies
  • Fundamentals of wastewater treatment
  • Plan, design, implement & monitor a localised wastewater treatment system
  • Wastewater reuse: Issues
  • Policies, legislation on water pollution & wastewater treatment

A “Certificate of Participation” will be awarded to all those who complete the course.

Street Performances for a Safer Delhi

The following is an invitation to all Delhiites - who are concerned about the city’s safety and who wish to make Delhi - a safer and better place to live in.

Jagori - Making Delhi SafeDelhi continues to kill its girl child in its shameful preference for sons. Abandoned girl children are occasionally found by garbage dumps or farm lands. Usually, they are killed in the womb through an abortion. To draw the attention of Delhi’s people to the subject, Jamghat and MakeMyTrip have come together to start a modest campaign.

Jamghat - a group of street children will stage a total of 10
performances (on female foeticde and sexual harassment) on the streets of Delhi and in its ‘killer’ buses this month. The buses will see what’s called ‘invisible theatre’…a group of passenger-actors will create a sexual harassment scene to evoke responses and engage passengers in the episode. The schedule of the plays trails along this note.

The plays end with a finale on 2nd September at India Gate…a silent demonstration, a human chain with men, women and girl children. We are creating banners, fliers and give-aways for the occasion. Please keep the evening free…it’s a Sunday.

The Schedule

23rd Aug 2007 (Thu): Bus No. 392: 4 PM

25th Aug 2007 (Sat): PVR Vasant Vihar: 6 PM

26th Aug 2007(Sun): Punjabi Bagh : 6 PM

28th Aug 2007 (Tue): Bahri Mudrika : 4 PM

30th Aug 2007 (Thu): Mudrika+- : 4 PM

1st Sep 2007 (Sat): Batra Cinema : 6 PM

UPDATED - 2nd Sep 2007 (Sun): Dilli Haat : 5.30 PM to 7.30 PM

Do come and, if possible, get a girl child along for the chain.

Amit Sinha from Jamghat can be contacted (9818705715) in case further details are seeked.
