Draft Guidelines for E-Waste Management

E-waste is one of the fastest growing waste streams in the world. In developed countries, it equals 1% of total solid waste generation and is expected to grow to 2% by 2010. In USA, it accounts 1% to 3% of the total municipal waste generation. In EU, historically, E-waste is growing three times faster than average annual municipal solid waste generation.

In developing countries, it ranges 0.01% to 1% of the total municipal solid waste generation. In China and India, though annual generation per capita is less than 1 kg, it is growing at an exponential pace. The increasing “market penetration” in developing countries, “replacement market” in developed countries and “high obsolescence rate” make E-waste as one of the fastest waste stream.

Consequenty, the Central Pollution Control Board has issued Draft Guidelines for Environmentally Sound Management of E-waste in India.

Center may give a “green” signal to Dow Chemicals?

Even as the Alumni of various Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) team up to put pressure on the institutes to prevent campus interviews being conducted by Dow Chemicals (which now owns Union Carbide)….

American Giants run into IIT backlash

down with dow bbc

IIT alumni gang up agaist Dow Chemicals

Alumni urge IITs to boycott Dow Chemicals

IITs urge bar on any tie with Dow Chemicals

Blacklist Dow Chemicals, demand IIT Alumni

….it’s a totally different scenario at the Center.

Dow Chemicals may get green signal HT

Far from banning the entry of Dow Chemicals into the country, the Center is gearing up to give the company a green signal to invest in India - even when the people of Bhopal are still suffering from not just the horror of the Bhopal Legacy but also from the threat of contamination from the chemicals that still lie around the site.

It would not speak good for the Government if such a clearance is actually given and Dow Chemicals be allowed to plant such time bombs in this country.

Tons of chemicals lie abandoned at the Union Carbide factory in Bhopal, poisoning the environment and people’s lives.

Another feather in Delhi Metro’s ‘green’ cap!

Delhi Metro has now got another feather in its ‘green’ cap! In an attempt to promote cycle as an eco-friendly mode of transportation, Delhi Metro has now begun to rent out cycles at its Vishwavidhalaya Station! Parking space for people who get their own cycles is also being provided.

Following is a news story from ExpressIndia.com on the same:

Metro goes green, to rent out cycles now
Express News Service

New Delhi, October 17 IF you thought Delhi Metro is only about swish trains that can take you places in matter of seconds, think again. In a novel experiment, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation today launched an eco-friendly initiative to promote cycling at Delhi University’s North Campus. Starting Thursday, commuters can take cycles on rent at the Vishwavidyalaya station for Rs 10 for every four hours. About 20 such cycles can be rented. To encourage more cyclists to take the Delhi Metro trains from its Vishwavidyalya station, DMRC also inaugurated a cycle stand to accommodate 50 cycles.

According to DMRC officials, the ‘rent-a-cycle’ facility will be extended to all parking sites of Delhi Metro by yearend. The number of stands at each station would depend on number of cycle users. At Seelampur, for example, the stand would accommodate 600 cycles, for officials say close to those many are parked there every day.

Delhi Metro PRO Anuj Dayal said the fare for cycle parking would be Rs 2 for 8-10 hours, and smart card users would be exempted. A monthly pass would be issued for Rs 20. DMRC is also negotiating with parking contractors for installation of cycle stands, Dayal said. “If the experiment works out well, DMRC may get stands fitted at select parking sites.”

DMRC also plans to install automatic parking at sites such as Pul Bangash, Pratap Nagar, Shastri Nagar, Kashmere Gate and Pitampura.

Petition on stopping Dow recruitment at IIT-M

Bhopal VictimsDow Chemical, the owner of Union Carbide, key accused (under both criminal and civil law) in the 1984 Bhopal gas disaster, is attempting to recruit IIT-Madras students. Since Union Carbide has not even responded to a summons in the criminal case, Dow Chemical is guilty of shielding a criminally absconding corporation.

Besides, Dow Chemical refuses to clean up the severe contamination present at the factory site which causes interminable suffering to the gas survivors and their offspring even today. This is a petition to IIT-Madras to refuse campus recruitment to Dow Chemical.

(Please indicate if you are an IIT Alumnus.)

Indeed, it is part of a larger campaign to petition IIT-Madras to screen the corporations it allows for campus recruitment in order to disallow criminal corporations.

Please also write to the members of the IIT-Madras Senate which consists of the Faculty and is the main decision-making body. The list of professors on the Senate is available here

Congratulations Mr. Pachauri..

From the index page of NobelPeacePrize.org:

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2007 is to be shared, in two equal parts, between the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (headed by Dr. R.K. Pachauri) and Albert Arnold (Al) Gore Jr. for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change.
