Nature Camp and Workshop on International Day of Biodiversity

Aravalli Biodiversity Park

The United Nations proclaimed May 22 as ‘The International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB)’ to increase the understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. This years theme for the International Day for Biodiversity (IDB) is Biodiversity, Development and Poverty Alleviation. The very enthusiastic Department of Environment (DoE), GNCT has come up with an interesting concept to observe this day.

Welcoming the day ahead, the Dept. of Environment is calling for a Nature Camp inviting students from the various Eco-Clubs across Delhi. The overnight camp will be organized on May 21, 2010 from 6.00 pm at the Aravalli Biodiversity Park, Vasant Vihar. The camp will culminate the next day with a workshop on Biodiversity at 9.00 am. Over 25 school students will be participating in this interesting activity. The Hon’ble Chief Minister of Delhi will grace the occasion on May 22, 2010. Also, other eminent speakers will speak on the subject in an interactive manner with the students.

The Forest Department of the Govt of NCT of Delhi has sent out the invite to all Eco-club schools across the city. Facilitated in the year 1998, the concept of Eco-Clubs has first started with just 100 schools. Now, after more than 10 years, there exist around 2500 such Eco-Clubs in Delhi. This has helped in generating much environmental awareness among the youth in the city and has indeed been a major step in creating ‘green citizens.’

The Aravalli Biodiversity Park is located on the South Central Ridge and spreads over an area of 692 acres. The area is bounded clockwise by JNU (Nelson Mandela Marg), the Mehrauli – Mahipalpur road, NH-8 and the Palam road and the southern boundary of Vasant Vihar. The landscape is undulating with gentle slopes and dotted with numerous morrum and clay mined pits of different sizes, depths and shapes. Such an urban ecotour experience by the school children on an important day as the IBD will only help strengthen their understanding and appreciation of our natural resources.
