Invite: Panel Discussion at NMML on Our Nuclear Future – Perspective and Prospects

A Nuclear Power Plant in France
Countries like France, with limited resource availability, have taken the nuclear path.

For Nuclear Energy to be a serious candidate as an Energy option for the country, it must cross two major barriers. These are: 1) the problem of nuclear waste: transuranic isotopes that have long term radio toxicity and biohazards, that anyone who studied science in school will understand and 2) the problem of limited naturally fissile (U-235) fuel supply. Since these are difficult problems, the economic, environmental and socio-political acceptability of nuclear energy remains debatable.

With this as the backdrop, the Nehru Memorial Museum & Library (NMML) is organising a panel discussion inviting concerned citizens on ‘Our Nuclear Future: Perspective and Prospects’ on 3rd January, 2011 in the NMML Seminar Room of the Library Building. Shri Jairam Ramesh, Hob’ble Minister of State for Environment & Forests (MoEF) will preside over the function.

Date: 3rd January, 2011 (Monday)
Time: 4.00 pm
Venue: Seminar Hall, Library Building, NMML

Professor Swadesh Mahajan from the Institute of Fusion Studies, Austin, University of Texas, USA will lead the discussion which will be moderated by Prof. Vikram Soni, UGC Professor of Theoretical Physics in Jamia Millia Islamia. Other panelists include Dr. R. Ramachandran, Ass. Editor Hindu-Frontline and Prof. V.C. Sahni from Bhabha Atmoic Research Center, Mumbai.

There is considerable debate over the use of nuclear as a source of energy in country’s development. The platform is an ideal one to discuss the issue, bring forward your concerns and lobby for green energy interventions for sustainable development.
