Migratory Birds: The Only Good Thing Left About Delhi’s Winters

Winters in Delhi was once a time of cheer and joy. Many would remember the cold, foggy winter mornings and the taste of a warm cup of tea or coffee while standing in the balcony. Still others would remember the excitement of taking a quick job or brisk walk in the nearby park, if not to the more prominent ones, just to regain the body heat. Inhaling the fog, and exhaling the white misty spirit of Delhi was once part of the winter experience in Delhi. Not anymore. Delhi's October smell, the fragrance of the blooming Alstonia, was once an exciting announcement of Delhi's winters. Breathing out in the open, without a face mask has ...

Stubble burning around Delhi during October 2018. Winter is peaking in Delhi these days and the air pollution this year has been more engulfing than ever. As Delhi headed into the winter months, citizens did brace for the city's notoriously poor air quality to get even worse. The overall Air Quality Index (AQI) of Delhi was recorded close to 250 at the end of October. Things got much out of hand though and according to available figures, AQI has peaked at 999 on more than one days at several places in Delhi since then. With the approach of winter, airborne particles and toxic chemicals that make up the smog prove to be a major hindrance to daily life in Delhi every year. This also proves to be a major public health hazard. The Lancet Commission on Pollution and Health has reported th...

The festival of Diwali is no longer a festival of joy alone and is accompanied by misery especially for those suffering from breathing disorders. This is true for the entire NCT of Delhi, which has an alarming population of over 20 million people. Every year during Diwali, the air quality worsens and is worst during and immediately after the Diwali night. The large-scale burning of fire crackers during the Diwali night, which spikes up the already air polluted National Capital is the principal cause of this pollution. This year, the Government of NCT of Delhi has taken significant steps for ensuring the reduction of air pollution due to Diwali. The Government began with writing a letter to all the schools, through its Eco Clubs Scheme. The Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi Shri Manish ...

Where is the compensatory afforestation? Of the many things Delhi is famous for, the most spacious are its Government colonies located in New Delhi. These include residential areas such as Lodhi Colony, Laxmi Bai Nagar, Sarojini Nagar, Netaji Nagar, parts of Chanakyapuri, the neighbourhood of India Gate and a few adjoining areas. Most of these have been two-storied structures with abundant parks (and parking) all around. These Government colonies have therefore acted as green buffers for Delhi against air pollution, noise pollution and the congestion and traffic of the...

Six Websites to Find Out Real Time Air Quality Index Around You in Delhi

The air pollution in Delhi has reached alarming proportions and every winter brings with it lung diseases, asthmatic attacks, coughing, teary eyes and long queues of the sick and elderly at hospitals complaining of chest congestion. Everything from vehicular exhaust, to bursting of crackers during Diwali, the burning of crop residue in nearby states of Punjab & Haryana, burning of leaves and waste and the ongoing construction work contributes to the air pollution in Delhi. Temperature inversion during the winter months does not let these pollutants get dispersed easily and they linger on for longer periods in Delhi's air. The trend is not new and a graded response by the Government to address Delhi's air pollution problem also does not seem to be helping. Thus, it does not seem ...

AQI Based Graded Response to Pollution Crisis in Delhi Explained

Air pollution has become a consistent environmental challenge in Delhi in recent years. An air quality based graded response system is now being put in place which could increase your parking rates and close down schools during peak pollution days. What is important to understand is if it will actually help bring down Delhi's air pollution and what role can citizens play in helping the Government fight this life threatening menace. Here's a quick understanding of this AQI based graded response system. The Hon'ble Supreme Court of India directed the framing and submission of graded response action plan for various categories of National Air Quality Index (AQI) on 10 November, 2016.
