As we walk along the roads of Delhi, there are some entities calling us and crying out for help. They are moaning of the dreadful death we are thrusting on them from suffocation and starvation, slowly and painfully. We cannot hear them because they cannot speak. They receive our attention only when the services they render to us start falling short for us. Yes! I am talking about those magical devices on the sides of roads, in front of shops, in our backyards, around our institutions, in areas of traffic, which keep imbibing the notorious carbon dioxide for us and continue to give oxygen that we terribly need. Here's another tree dechoking success story we present as a model for the citizens of Delhi. After reading the blog posts, Trees Dechoked: GK-I Residents Show the Way Against Concretization, students of B.Tech (Biotechnology) at GGSIP University took upon themselves to save trees from concretization and old rusted tree guards that are generally planted along with new tree saplings for protection and are often left unremoved thus hampering the growth of the trees. The students had previously written to the authorities at the MCD and PWD for removal of concrete and old tree guards but no action was taken whatsoever. This was discouraging since although large number of rules and regulation for protection of environment and especially trees existed, no civic authority bothered to follow...

Some of most of the majestic trees in Delhi are all 70-80 (maybe more) years old and form a part of the natural heritage of the city. Each time there is a thunderstorm that brings with it strong winds (of which there have been plenty lately), some of these trees get damaged and even uprooted. It seems (and so would 'some' tell us) that it was age that got these trees down. But closer observation reveals a story much more depressing than that. As Delhi develops into the world class city that 'many' are working hard to make it, concretization is the key word. And the concerete does not seem to be seeing an electric pole apart from a tree.
