Blog IMPACT: Students Use RTI to Dechoke Trees

Green Alert
Here's another tree dechoking success story we present as a model for the citizens of Delhi. After reading the blog posts, Trees Dechoked: GK-I Residents Show the Way Against Concretization, students of B.Tech (Biotechnology) at GGSIP University took upon themselves to save trees from concretization and old rusted tree guards that are generally planted along with new tree saplings for protection and are often left unremoved thus hampering the growth of the trees. The students had previously written to the authorities at the MCD and PWD for removal of concrete and old tree guards but no action was taken whatsoever. This was discouraging since although large number of rules and regulation for protection of environment and especially trees existed, no civic authority bothered to follow...

Saluting the Earth on Her Day

Flying past, rolling on the roads, flying above them on major roads in Delhi are parachute shaped tiny seeds of “Saptaparni” going the way the wind will take them. The flowers of this tree are not so prominent. Then there are small round seeds coated in soft cotton balls seeds of the Silk Cotton tree of the “Panchparni.” These have, almost a month ago, displayed their splendour of bright large red to orange coloured flowers. These are especially noticeable as there are no leaves on these trees. Both blossomed six weeks ago. Then the Gulmohars and the Laburnums and the Pongams are in full bloom because of the heat and the sun. These are trees planted way back in DDA colonies, school compounds and open spaces. While the Neem, Peepal, and the Banayan trees compete with these and grow any w

Take an Earth Day Pledge: Energy Conservation Amidst the Heat of Delhi

Articles, Events
The scorching 40+ heat of the Delhi summer evidently leads to a tremendous load on the city's energy supply. This is especially because the rising standard of living over the past few years, coupled with more intense summers has led to a tremendous shift from water coolers to ACs across the NCT of Delhi. The ever increasing population of Delhi is another factor which makes the the energy demand go up each consecutive year. This increased pressure on the energy infrastructure furthers its impact on the environment by increased pollution and enhanced carbon emissions. Since the government is not able to match the pace of infrastructure development with the rise in demand, people often have to face severe power cuts. Those who can afford, adapt by installing inverters, etc. ...

Renewable Energy Should be the Way Forward for Delhi’s Satellite Towns

Green Alert
Haryana State Renewable Energy (Akshay Urja) Minster Mahender Pratap Singh, along with other guests at the Energy Fair 2010 in Gurgoan Delhi is one of the fastest growing cities in the world and is already a megalopolis of a large magnitude. The rapid urbanization of the city has put a tremendous pressure on the resources which has made the city an energy guzzler. The ecological footprint of Delhi is increasing each passing day and the city has now spread to include even the neighbouring towns. The National Capital Region (NCR) status that the capital city and its satellite towns enjoy, comes with much strain on the natural resources of not just the Delhi conurbation, but that of almost the entire nation. With this as the backdrop, Delhi Greens partnered with Advit Foundation...

Vitality and Abundance

Green Alert
May this Diwali be a celebration of vitality and abundance to all of us. Let me be authentic about who I was before I started writing in this blog. I tended to look at vitality as something that is limited to what I could provide and the planet we live on, to have limited resources. Therefore the constant concern for me was, what would create the necessary energy? The easiest option I chose was always to nap or sit before the TV surfing channels so that I would have enough energy to get into action. I realized that no amount of rest and recreation was enough and I became lazy and bound to home. Fifty Blogs down the road (yes! unbelievable isn’t it?) I realized that you are the creators of my vitality. With the Blog I am committed to creating a possibility of a green and clean city while
