Image © BP p.l.c. “Aaww…it hurts!!”…that’s what I thought the earth would say to the entire disturbing phenomenon happening on it. Recently breaking news from the US broke my heart and I believed many others who love nature. British Petroleum (BP), one of the world's largest energy companies, providing its customers with fuel for transportation, energy for heat and light, retail services and petrochemicals products for everyday items, became the culprit of environmental havoc in the Gulf of Mexico. It is reported that the mischief happened due to failure of the blowout preventer to seal the well when trouble brewed. The function of the blowout preventer which is a heav

Mother Nature, as Gaia--the Greek Goddess or our very own 'Dharti Maa' personifies the entire ecosystem of Planet Earth. Mother Nature is always working to achieve and maintain harmony, wholeness and balance within the environment. Mother Nature heals, nurtures and supports all life on this planet, and ultimately all life and health depend on Her. In time, Nature heals all ills. This Mother's Day, as you do those small things for your mother, that cannot even come closer to repaying for all that she's done for you, also give a thought to Mother Earth.  To all that she's given to you and to all that you are taking from her. And spend a moment to ponder up on how good a child have you been to her. This Mother's Day, make sure you take responsibility and then live up to it. A ve

A certain spark of wisdom can enlighten the mind and reset the existing thoughts in it. Such a moment blessed me when a good friend of mine visited last weekend and we had a very enriching discussion on the history of global environmental movement. So far, I have heard of a western (read modern) environmental movements and the Indian versions as well. According to the former, the environmental movement began with the Industrial Revolution while the latter credits it as back as to the reign of the Great Emperor Ashoka himself. The Book of Genesis talks about how God created the whole universe and the story of human first walking on the Earth. I believe in the divine power that started off the whole earth mechanism and its beautiful functioning. Nature is a witness to it, and time is ...

Recently during a general discussion with my colleague, he said something that drove me to ponder upon a good thought and the result clearly became this post. “We are not doing anything on Earth Day this year, and I believe it suits our work interest driven organization”. When asked why he said so, he explained, “Earth Day is one day in a year when people come up with beautiful ideas to contribute towards saving the environment and actually implement what they plan. So, it is a holiday for us…at least one day we can be rest assured that something or someone is doing the job of protecting the environment & the cause of Earth Day”. The official website of Earth Day Network, the coordinator of Earth Day globally, collate & list many events and campaigns that will be happeni

Take an Earth Day Pledge: Energy Conservation Amidst the Heat of Delhi

The scorching 40+ heat of the Delhi summer evidently leads to a tremendous load on the city's energy supply. This is especially because the rising standard of living over the past few years, coupled with more intense summers has led to a tremendous shift from water coolers to ACs across the NCT of Delhi. The ever increasing population of Delhi is another factor which makes the the energy demand go up each consecutive year. This increased pressure on the energy infrastructure furthers its impact on the environment by increased pollution and enhanced carbon emissions. Since the government is not able to match the pace of infrastructure development with the rise in demand, people often have to face severe power cuts. Those who can afford, adapt by installing inverters, etc. ...
