Communicating the Cause: How NGOs Can Benefit from Having A Website

Green Alert
We have already discussed in the previous post on this topic as to how 'communication' is THE most important tool in promoting the cause(s) represented by any civil society group. This is nothing new and the UNDP's Human Development Report 0f 1993 had also highlighted this fact by noting that, "People's participation is becoming the central issue of our time." Participation requires communication and that too in a two-way process. The telephone, invented as long back as the 1876, has been an excellent--though a cumbersome tool for solving this purpose. In fact systems such as the 0845 telephone number discussed previously have helped harness the telephone for companies and brands interested in setting up a toll free two-way exchange with their target audience. What is however new is th...

Communicating the Cause: NGOs, Social Media and the Need to Reach Out

Green Alert
The importance of communication can be well understood by the fact that the most evolved among all mammals, the humans, also have the most sophisticated natural forms of communication. It is this tool of communication that sets us apart from other animals. NGOs have a key role to play in "communicating" the cause which they are working on to the masses. If people don't know something exists, people will not be able to understand it, use it, promote it or act upon it. At the same time, it is important for the those raising awareness to maintain a two-way channel such that those who may have their queries can get it resolved. For this, the concerned agency may use systems like the conventional 0800 numbers or if rely on the low rates of mobile calling, hoping their target audience gets p...

Finding Delhi: A Book on Loss and Renewal in the Megacity

Green Alert
Edited by Bharati Chaturvedi, Penguin Books India presents to the people of Delhi--and to anyone who knows Delhi to be her/his own--Finding Delhi: Loss and Renewal in the Megacity. The edited volume brings together voices that offer a kaleidoscope view of the morphing, knotted city even as it is simultaneously experienced. Finding Delhi is an unprecedented chronicling of contemporary Delhi—the nature of contemporary its reinvention and the effects of this personality shift on those who experience it. It is an examination relevant to all urban spaces being re-engineered on the road to ‘world-classness’. A century after the British built New Delhi as the capital of India, it is in the middle of furious sometimes haphazard, growth in a race against time to become a ‘world-class’ city.
