The first week of July is celebrated as the Van Mahotsav of the Forest Festival across India. The timing is just right for planting trees since the monsoon prepares the soil. Interestingly, the concept of Van Mahostav is not recent and was actually given much before the onset of the ongoing environmental crisis. The Van Mahotsav or Forest Festival was initiated by the then Union Agriculture and Food Minister of India Kanaiyalal Maneklal Munshi (popularly known as as Kulpati K.M. Munshi) in the year 1950. Born on 30 December 1887, Kulpati K.M. Munshi was an Indian independence movement activist, politician, writer, lawyer and educationist. He remains a well-known name in Gujarati literature. The objective of the Plantation Drive is to make Delhi green and pollution free. More than 5 lakh saplings are being planted in different parts of the city. The Dharti Bachao Cycle Yatra, a one man yatra that began on 5th June (World Environment Day) to raise environmental awareness concluded on 5 July 2016 at Lucknow. The journey covered a major part of Western Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. The details about the journey till 24 June 2016, till Etawah, can be read here. From Etawah, Mr. Gyan Prakash reached Auraiya at 10.00 AM on 25 June. Toyota has been working with top priority to environment management and reducing greenhouse gas emissions at all stages of vehicle life cycle. The company has also been focusing on reducing its overall carbon footprint and conducting tree plantation and related activities for ensuring the same. In this regard, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) organized a reforestation drive at the Bannerghatta National Park near Bengaluru in Karnataka. The event witnessed participation from 600 TKM employees with their families, along with 150 students from Delhi Public School, Bangalore South, and 100 members from the Karnataka Forest Department. Yokohama India will be planting 12,100 trees as part of its global Forever Forest project to plant 5,00,000 trees by 2017. Yokohama India began the plantation on the 100 year anniversary of the company on 16th February 2016. Saplings were planted by the company at its factory at the HSIIDC Industrial Estate, Bahadurgarh, Jhajjar in Haryana. Keen to contribute to the community in Bahadurgarh, the Japanese Tyre Major plans to plant 12100 trees in the next 7 years up to 2023.
