World Wetlands Day is celebrated on 2nd February every year to mark the signing of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance in 1971. The day is a reminder to all us of the ecosystem services provided by wetlands in both urban and rural areas. Delhi too benefits from the large number of wetlands, which are now becoming endangered. To highlight the importance of wetlands in Delhi for urban sustainability, the Yamuna Biodiversity Park organises a gathering of citizens and experts on every Wetlands Day. This year, the celebrations were joined by large number of students as well members from the local community. 2nd February is celebrated as World Wetlands Day around the world. It is this date on which an International Convention for the protection of wetlands was signed at the Iranian city of Ramsar. In India, the Ramsar Convention has identified 27 wetlands of international importance and they are being rigorously monitored. However, there are thousands of wetlands around the country which are being rapidly degraded, and whom depends the lives of many more thousand people. Delhi itself has lost hundreds of wetlands in the recent past. This is a dangerous situation for the city. Anybody who works with Nature understands well the importance of wetlands. World wetlands day is celebrated every year on 2nd February. This day marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea. The day is celebrated as a reminder of the importance of wetlands in our lives through the various services that they provide. It is also a reminder to all the citizens of Delhi that we once had over 1,000 wetlands and less than 400 active wetlands remain in the NCT of Delhi today. The Yamuna Biodiversity Park (YBP) invites all citizens to celebrate the World Wetlands Day on the 2nd of February. This date marks the signing of the 'Convention on Wetlands' in 1971 at Ramsar, Iran. The 2010 Wetlands Day theme is "Caring for Wetlands – an Answer to Climate Chang". The theme highlights the fact that wetlands, with their biodiversity, can help mitigate climate change.
