Center for Science & Environment (CSE) warmly invites students & Young professionals to attend an interesting course titled, ‘Agenda for survival: A
certificate course on the policies and practices of environmental management in India (fron Oct. 23 – Dec. 14, 2007, New Delhi).
The course is being organised by the Anil Agarwal Green Centre, the education and training unit of the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE).
The course is said to be of immense benefit to anyone interested in understanding and exploring the complexities underlying the environment-development debate in India. The teaching approach is innovative: lectures, readings, debates, weekly outings, active reportage and a five-day field tour to rural India. Participants will also have the opportunity to put together an online documentary of their experiences, using text, video and audio.

About the Course
The course is inspired by a concern that animated the work of eminent environmentalist Anil Agarwal (Founder -Chairperson of CSE), whose ideas on environment and sustainability remain relevant even today: the need to
balance economic growth and ecological concern. He called it ‘the challenge of the balance’. Instructors for this course will be drawn from CSE’s research and programme teams. Some lectures will also be led by eminent activists and policy makers.
The course comprises the following modules:
- Governance imperatives;
- Managing natural resources today;
- Urban growth and its challenges;
- Spotlight on industrial growth; poverty and the biomass economy;
- Global environment negotiations: focus on climate change.
Admissions: The course is open to college students from any stream, and young professionals. A total of 25 participants will be selected. All candidates are first required to submit a 500-word essay on the following topic: Discuss why you agree/disagree with this statement: “Environmental concern is irrelevant to India’s growth model.”
As only a limited number of seats are available, candidates
should register online immediately and post the entrance essay to the address below latest by Sept. 24, 2007, together with a detailed résumé / CV. Short-listed candidates will be interviewed by telephone. Those finally selected will be informed by Oct. 3, 2007.
Course fee of Rs. 15,000 is to be paid in advance via Cheque or Bank Draft (drawn in favour of ‘Centre for Science and Environment’. Add Rs. 15 for all non-Delhi cheques). The fee includes all field excursions, reading materials, lunch and refreshments during training days. Outstation
participants will be helped with accommodation, on request.
KAMLA CHOWDHRY FELLOWSHIPS: Twelve candidates will be awarded the prestigious Kamla Chowdhry Fellowship, which carry a compensation of Rs. 12,000 each. Candidates will be awarded these Fellowships based on their performance in the entrance essays. Additional fellowships are available for outstation (non-Delhi) participants. The Fellowship programme is supported by a generous endowment from the late Dr. Kamla Chowdhry, a distinguished academic and an ardent Gandhian, whose multifaceted interests spanned forestry, ecology, environment, women’s issues and people’s participation.
