Kofi Annan on 5 Day ‘Environmental Mission’ Visit to India
Nobel Peace Prize laureate and former Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan will arrive in New Delhi today to deliver the inaugural address at the 14th Delhi Sustainable Development Summit (DSDS). Mr Annan will also meet the Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh, to exchange views on political and economic developments in the region, climate change and opportunities for south – south cooperation.
Founding chair of the Kofi Annan Foundation, Mr. Kofi Annan is a firm believer of the fact that India plays a key role in addressing some of the world’s biggest challenges such as peace and stability, poverty alleviation and climate change. “India itself is amongst the countries most affected by climate change as various droughts and floods have shown. Its leadership, within the region and globally will be essential to tackle these challenges.”, Mr. Annan emphasized.
The Kofi Annan Foundation works to promote better global governance and catalyse action towards a fairer, more secure world by promoting sustainable development, peace and security and human rights. As its Founding Chair, Mr. Annan is working tirelessly to achieve the objectives laid down by the Foundation. After his stay in Delhi, Mr. Annan will travel to Bangalore and as the Chief Guest at the Infosys Prize Ceremony. Here, he will emphasize the importance of scientific research and innovation to finding solutions to some of India’s and the world’s greatest challenges.
