Gobar Dhan project

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Gobar-Dhan (Bio-CNG) Plant in Indore on 19 February 2022 through video conferencing. The Governor Madhya Pradesh, Mangubhai C. Patel; Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan; Union Ministers Hardeep Singh Puri, Dr. Virendra Kumar and Kaushal Kishore were among those present on the occasion.

The Prime Minister stressed the importance of Gobar Dhan and elaborated it to include wet urban household waste along with cattle waste. He also shared that similar Gobar Dhan plants will soon be established in other big municipal bodies. He informed that the objective is to keep Indian cities clean, free from pollution and move towards clean energy. Villages are also being included in this plan and it will provide, among other benefits, extra income for the farmers. Stray cattle management and India’s climate commitments will thus be achieved with this one shot!

The Indore Bio Gas Plant has a capacity to treat 550 tonnes per day of segregated wet organic waste. It is expected to produce around 17,000 kg per day of CNG, and 100 tonnes per day of organic compost. The plant is based on zero landfill models, whereby no rejects will be generated. It is expected to yield multiple environmental benefits including reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, green energy and organic manure.

The plant is set by the Indore Clean Energy Pvt Ltd, a Special Purpose Vehicle set up by Indore Municipal Corporation and Indo Enviro Integrated Solutions Ltd. (IEISL) with 100% capital investment of ₹150 crores by IEISL. Indore Municipal Corporation will purchase 50% of CNG produced by the plant and run 400 city buses on CNG. The remaining CNG will be sold in the open market.
