O.P. Jindal University Launches School of Environment and Sustainability

O.P. Jindal Global University launched its 9th School, the Jindal School of Environment and Sustainability (JSES) at an International Conference in New Delhi. The Conference, on Environment and Sustainability: Critical Issues and Solutions, took place on 12 March 2020. JSES will be led by renowned environmentalist, Prof. Armin Rosencranz, formerly at Stanford University, as its founding Dean.

The School was launched by Dr. Bibek Debroy, Chairman, Economic Council to the Prime Minister, Government of India; Justice Michael D. Wilson, Judge, Supreme Court of Hawaii, USA; Mr. M.C Mehta, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India and Dean Armin Rosencranz. The setting up of JSES is a significant step in the context of mitigating the immense challenges that are facing the Environment in India and the world.

“The Jindal School of Environment and Sustainability hopes to lead India and the world towards a sustainable future with an innovative and interdisciplinary teaching pedagogy, cutting-edge research and practice-based engagement. Through national and international collaborations, JSES will promote joint teaching and research programmes, and a comparative perspective on environment and sustainability issues,” noted Prof. C. Raj Kumar, Founding Vice Chancellor of O.P. Jindal Global University.

Speaking at the Launch Conference, Hon’ble Justice Michael D. Wilson of Hawaii, USA said, “We need India to provide leadership on addressing the challenge of sustainability. The issue being faced by judges internationally is climate change. Executive branch has to work in correlation with the judicial branch in order to bring about a significant change. Do the right thing and change will happen.” Citing a study by the Centre for Climate Change at Cambridge, Justice Wilson called for deeper and more rapid emissions reduction, creation of new carbon dioxide sinks and re-freezing the North and South Poles.

JSES will begin by offering B.A. (Hons.) course in Environmental and Sustainability Studies. A primary goal of JSES will remain is to offer undergraduate students a concentration in Environmental Studies with an opportunity to explore how humans interact with the environment, including physical, biological, philosophical, social and legal elements. “By attracting internationally qualified faculty members and pooling together interdisciplinary scholars under a single school, JSES is positioning itself as a producer of knowledge and shaper of careers in environment and sustainability,” noted Prof. Armin Rosencranz, Founding Dean of JSES.

O.P. Jindal Global University is an Institution of Eminence (IoE) and is in fact the only non-STEM and non-Medicine University which has been recognised as an IoE. O.P. Jindal Global University is established by the Government of Haryana and is recognized by the University Grants Commission.
